Tichenor Middle School Jr. Youth of the Year

Kaylin Curry, who is an 8th grade student at Tichenor Middle School received the special recognition of Boys and Girls Club Jr. Youth of the Year.Kaylin was one of 11 students students named from all of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.  She was recognized at the Boys and Girls Club Annual Achievement Luncheon on April 19th held at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati.  Congratulations, Kaylin!


State Assessment Window
The state assessment window will open on May 7th.  Please check your school's assessment calendar to ensure you are present and prepared.  It is extremely important that all students and staff make an extra effort to be present all year long and the assessment window is no exception. 

Staff Perfect Attendance
Kim Nolan from Tichenor Middle School was the winner of the award for the March perfect attendance drawing.  As a reminder, all employees with perfect attendance each month are eligible for a drawing.  Congratulations Ms. Nolan and thanks to you and to all staff members who had perfect attendance during the month of March.

Instructional Rounds
Recently a team of school and district staff members conducted instructional rounds at Lindeman Elementary.  It was a wonderful day with many positives.  Lindeman is implementing focused literacy strategies through programs such as Ortin-Gillingham and many others.  All schools we have visited have strengths to share.  Lindeman is a model for the implementation of Response to Intervention and high level tier 1 instruction for all students.  They, like all of our schools are making strides and great gains with students!

Art Students Create Banner

Devin Trevor and Rikki Dressman, students in Ms. Vogelpohl's art class at Lloyd Memorial High School, created a beautiful district banner displayed at the annual KSBA Conference. The theme was "Taking the Next Step".  Thanks to Devin and Rikki and Ms. Vogelpohl!

Lloyd Students Visit Elementary Schools
During the month of March about 200 Lloyd Memorial High School Students visited the elementary schools Arnett, Howell, Lindeman and Miles.  Each grade level at the high school adopted and elementary school to visit.  High school students read with elementary student partners and plan to continue their visits next year!

Instructional Rounds
District administrators and teachers recently participated in the  instructional rounds process at Howell Elementary School in February and Tichenor Middle School in March.  The process was very informative and extremely positive.  In both schools we saw lots of targeted, focused instruction aimed at increasing student learning at all levels.  The instructional rounds process helps all of us to grow and learn together and is an integral part of continuous progress.  Instructional rounds will continue to assist us in doing all we can to meet the needs our students and enrich and increase their learning.  The next instructional rounds process will be in April at Lindeman Elementary.  Thanks to everyone involved in the process including the students classroom teachers who welcome everyone into the classrooms.

Federal Grant Received
The Erlanger-Elsmere School  District was awarded a federal school counseling grant this school year.  The district partnered with Dayton and Campbell County through the NKCES grants consortium to complete the grant.  Vicki Dansberry assists our district and others in researching and writing grants through the consortium.  The counseling grant currently funds a full time counseling position at the middle school and will do so for three years.  The grant is also in partnership with NKU and Dr. Brett Zymroski, who serves as a consultant with Tichenor and the district through the grant.  As a result, all of our district counselors have been involved with a book study on Evidence-Based Counseling.  They are working at designing and implementing evidence-based counseling programs and services which will have positive impacts on student learning.  Tichenor Middl School Counselors Angie Bielecki, Amy Gillio, and Kendilynn Madden recently presented at the

Tichenor Middle School Counselors Angie Bielecki, Amy Gillio, and Kendilynn Madden recently presented at the National Evidence-Based School Counseling Conference March 18-19 at the NKU METS Center for Corporate Learning (3861 Olympic Blvd.) in Erlanger.

 

The Northern Kentucky University School Counseling Program collaborated with the NKU Center for Educator Excellence and the Ronald H. Fredrickson Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to present the conference.

The conference focused on equipping professional school counselors with the skills to choose evidence-based interventions and the tools to evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs by measuring the impact of interventions on critical measurements such as test scores, grade-point-averages, post-secondary going rates, attendance rates, office referrals and drop-out rates. 

Focusing on Students

Planning for Student Success and Maximizing Learning:
On March 15th staff members in all schools were working diligently in their buildings.  Teachers, principals, and other staff members were involved in training and planning geared at maximizing every student learning opportunity left in the 2012-13 school year.  As I reviewed agendas for the day and sat in on trainings there was one common theme:  STUDENT LEARNING.  Schools were discussing and planning to do everything possible to individualize student learning opportunities to take all students to the next level.  In many schools, it felt like the first day of school and it is great to see and hear such focus and enthusiasm on doing what is best for our students!

Lloyd Students Receive  IC³ Certification

Students in Ms. Albrink's class  received their IC³ Certification. " The IC³ is a global certification program that

is designed to certify an individual's digital literacy skills associated with basic computer and Internet use. IC³ is the first computer certification to be recognized by the National Skill Standards Board (NSSB).  This is a great accomplishment!  Congratulations to the students and Ms. Albrink!

Employee Perfect Attendance

We provide monthly incentives for our students and we would also like to provide a recognition to our staff members with perfect attendance.  We will be conducting a drawing monthly for each month left in the school year for all employees in all positions with perfect attendance.  The winner will receive a gift card.  The gift card is not funded through the district, but through a donation.  For the month of February, the person with perfect attendance who has won the gift card is Phyllis Ginn, teacher at Howell Elementary School.  Congratulations Ms. Ginn!  We will be conducting the staff member perfect attendance drawing for the month of March on April 15th.  The name of the winner will be posted on this blog. 

 

Energy Management

Thanks to all staff members assisting with conserving energy in our buildings.  We are seeing savings in almost every building.  The efforts of maintenance staff, custodial staff, food service staff, teachers, and paraprofessionals are very much appreciated.  Collaboration with our district energy management consultant has been wonderful.  Keep up the great work!  Thank you!

• MARY BURCH, our district health coordinator and R.N. has received a wonderful well-deserved recognition. The UC College of Nursing has selected her as a recipient of the Nursing Nightingale Award. She and 5 others were chosen from about 250 nurses that were nominated. She will be presented with her the award and $1000 at the award dinner on April 28th. Please congratulate her!


• Thank you to everyone who was able to complete the TELL Survey. Our district had a 91.16% participation rate! Thanks to Sherri Schmitz, Vicki Baker, Joan Bryson, Asha Coltrane, Regina Danks, and Regina Pelfrey for facillitating the process.


• Please refer to the email sent to all teachers on 3/31/11 regarding the TELL Survey Prize Drawings that will be held in the district.


• The last day for students will be May 27th. Employees will still work on May 31 and closing day will be June 1. A detailed hand out was sent out to all employees yesterday. You may also obtain a hard copy from your school principal. Parents will be notified in multiple ways providing them with advance notice of this calendar change.


• The state core content testing window will be April 18-29. The ITBS state testing window for students in grades 3-7 will be May 2-6.


• Enjoy a well-deserved Spring Break next week to those of you off during that time. Thanks for all you are doing each and every day for our students.

News and Information

• Bryan Sweasy, or Chief Information Officer has been sending out weekly links to stories highlighting schools and events in the Erlanger-Elsmere School District. Please take a moment to read over the stories to find out what's happening around the district.



• January 3-February 11 is the state assessment window for all ACCESS testing for students who are English Language Learners. These assessments are a part of state and federal accountability and should be taken very seriously by all teachers. Please schedule around the set ACCESS testing schedule at your school. All principals were given a copy of each school's schedule on December 8th.



• The district MAP testing window will be January 10-28. Please work with all students at all grade levels on personal goal setting. Those schools seeing the most increases are those who are setting individual goals with their students and differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs.



• We are still accepting entries for the district logo contest. The winner will receive a $100 savings bond. The contest is open to all students enrolled in the Erlanger-Elsmere School District.



• The Family Resource Centers and the Youth Service Centers assisted record numbers of families for the holidays this year. Thank you to the coordinators and the school personnel who assisted them in all that was provided.


• All schools in the district participated in giving during the holiday season. Many held canned food drives and some schools partnered allowing older students to work with younger students.

Accolades and Information

• The state assessment data has been released. The district saw increases in students scoring proficient and distinguished in reading at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. In math there were increases in the percentage of students scoring proficient and distinguished at the elementary and middle school levels. The high school also had increases in ACT scores. We will continue to disaggregate and drill down data to pinpoint specific student needs and adjust our instruction to meet those needs. While there is much to celebrate, we must maintain our focus on continuous improvement and use the momentum we have established to increase student learning for all students at all levels.
• The Lloyd High School Band won their division at the band competition at Conner this past Saturday.
• The first round of MAP testing is complete and all teachers have the real-time data for individualized instruction for students.
• On Demand Writing (12th grade), Plan Testing (10th grade), and Explore Testing (8th grade) windows are now completed. All of these assessments are a part of state testing and accountability.
• Lloyd High School is forming a soccer club. 18 girls have expressed interest. Ms. Wesling will be the club leader.
• Lloyd High School is forming a dance team. Presently, 15 students have expressed an interest.
• Tichenor Middle School 7th grade students will be visiting Northern Kentucky University on September 28th and September 29th.
• The Tichenor Trojans Middle School Football Team are Division Champs. They are doing well in their very first season.
• All of the elementary schools are collaborating to providea cross country program to 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade students. The first two meets were at Arnett and Howell. Many parents showed up in support of their children. This has been a wonderful, exciting program for the students involved.
• The 2010-11 school year is off to a great start. Thanks to everyone for helping to provide wonderful experiences for our students.

The First Day of School

Tomorrow will be an important day for our students. Things will be hectic as everyone learns new procedures and new faces. It is important that all parents and students entering our schools start that first day positively. I know each and every employee will be patient, welcoming, and helpful to all who enter our doors. Remember that students and parents are often nervous that first day-especially if the students are transitioning to a new school. The welcoming attitude, respect, and kindness displayed on that first day will help to set the tone for the school year. ACCOLADES

The first day of school for students will start tomorrow, but many district teachers and staff members have already been hard at work!

• Open Houses at Arnett, Howell, Lindeman, Miles, and Tichenor were well attended. Lloyd will host their Open House on August 26th from 5:30-7:30.
• Summer feeding took place most of the summer at various locations. Cafeteria personnel were here to provid lunch and breakfast to our students this summer.
• Maintenance worked diligently all summer to prepare for the first day of school.
• Transportation training took place for bus drivers and bus monitors.
• Summer programs took place at all schools.
• Home visits were conducted by teachers at various schools.
• Band members, football players, and staff members involved in those activities were practicing in the summer heat.
• Mentoring programs and student mentors hosted training and events at Tichenor and Lloyd.
• Lloyd's 2009-10 Junior Class showed significant increases on the ACT which was taken by all 11th graders in the state of Kentucky as a part of the state assessment requirements.
• Tichenor saw great results from their Rewards Reading Program and plans to continue implementation for the 2010-11 school year.
• Miles was featured in the August issue of Kentucky Teacher.
• Teacher representatives and administrators were involved with the first work and training of the new content standards.
• Lindeman students' pumpkin patch is growing and being weeded.
• Many Howell students and staff members took a trip to Kings Island!
• Arnett students were involved in activities with the school library and also the YMCA.
• Teachers were involved in MAP training and other activities over the summer to assist us with increasing student learning. All administrators were involved in training throughout the summer.

STATE BUDGET INFORMATION

The language under which we have been operating, that required two six-hour days above the number in your 2005-06 calendar, is set to expire with the current budget on June 30, 2010. Since there is no budget for 2010-11 at the moment, we must plan for the statutory requirement for the minimum school term for 2010-11; that is, a 185-day school term and the equivalent of 175 six-hour instructional days (see KRS 158.070). This, of course, could change if the General Assembly meets prior to June 30 and adopts a budget with a different requirement. However, all versions of the budget that we saw during the 2010 session required only 185 days.

ACCOLADES

• Regional Special Olympics Track and Field Events were held right here in the Erlanger-Elsmere School District on Saturday, April24,2010. Thanks to Robyn Burke, Candace Campbell and many other staff members who made the day possible and wonderful for the athletes involved. School Resource Officer, Todd Brendel was recognized and awarded at the event for his many years of service to Special Olympics.
• The Reptile Convention was held at Lloyd High School this past Saturday. Kudos to Mr. Gels and the students who organized and planned the event. Student presentations lined the hallway and reptiles filled the gymnasium.
• Lloyd student, Jibril-Inman McCaster was recognized for his community service and presented with the prestigious Commonwealth Ambassado Award for from Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson.
• Lloyd High School Teachers Lisa Heck, Mac Coolley, Richard Dube, and Jami Sastre were recognized at the April Board meeting for their dedication and leadership.
• Tichenor Middle School Teachers Jeremy Dodd, Darryl Camack, Tony Montague, and Karen Luehrman were recognized at the April Board meeting for their dedication and leadership.
• Howel Elementary partnered with Wendy's to rasie money for their school through a "burger bash".
• Arnett Elementary Teacher Stephanie Ruttle was recognized at the April Board Meeting bya parent for her dedication to students.
• Students from Miles and Howell Elementary received awards in the Governor's Cup Competition. Teacher sponsors Julia Dubowy, Jami Wheeler, and Krista Wainscott and school principals Bryant Gillis and Eric Sayler made the competition possible.
• The Erlanger-Elsmere Family Resource Center held the Summer Fair Event on Thursday, April 15th at Scheben Gym and Dietz Auditorium. It was a great event. Thanks to Missy Sorg and Karen Costello for their organization of the event.
• Girls on the Run has been an excellent program for a team of Erlanger-Elsmere Students. Tracey Molley, Angie Bielecki, Jennifer Weber, and Karen Hughes have all been working with the team that will run in a big event next month. Girls on the Run is a national program that promotes a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and self-esteem.
• Miles Elementary will be featured in an upcoming article in Kentucky Teacher!
• On May 15, Lindeman Elementary will be looking for volunteers to assist them with landscaping the front of the school. On Saturday, May 15th a crew from the 7 Hills Church and volunteers from the A.J. Lindeman community will converge to create a new face for their school. They are looking to get as many families, parents, students and volunteers to help transform Lindeman Elementary. To quote Mr. Shires, Principal, "I want to give a huge THANK YOU to our neighbors Viox & Viox for providing us with an outstanding landscape plan and 7 Hills Church for providing volunteers and the purchase of all of the materials. We are grateful for all the help and support these community members have shown our school."

Upcoming News and Events

• Legislative Caucus-February 20, 2010- Just a reminder that this Saturday, February 20th the NKY Legislative Caucus will hold a public forum at Boone County High School starting at 10:00 AM. It is recommended that you plan to arrive by 9:30 if you wish to sign up to speak. It is crucial that we have a large turnout like last year; an even larger turnout than last year would be outstanding!! Our legislators need to hear from us again about the importance of maintaining funding for P-12 and postsecondary education in Northern Kentucky. Please wear red and plan on being there to give your personal input on the needs of education for our children.
• NKEAT (The Northern Kentucky Education Action Team) includes many stakeholders. Northern Kentucky Superintendents attend these meetings which are held in support of education and collaboration with the community. ACCOLADES

• Arnett Elementary: Arnett is a finalist for a 21st Century Learning Grant. They have made it to the next round and were visited by KDE as a part of the process. They will find out if they will receive the grant after the new year!
• Howell Elementary: Howell hosted their first men of Howell event with fathers of students at Howell. It was well received and the group has plans to take the children bowling for their next meeting.
• Lindeman Elementary: Lindeman has been working with Viox and Viox to design a plan for landscaping for their school. Viox and Viox kindly donated their services to develop a formal plan. Lindeman plans to work through BEST partnerships, the extension office, FRC student programs and local businesses and organizations to eventually fulfill the plan through donations and programs.
• Miles Elementary: Mr. Bryant Gillis, Principal, Mrs. Della Kemper, Teacher, and Mrs. Gina Danks, Teacher were asked to speak before the Education Committee of the Legislative Research Committee. They shared some of the work they are doing with standards based instruction, interventions, and all that they are doing to help students succeed. The Office of Education Accountability was also present and was extremely complimentary of Miles Elementary. Thank you to these three individuals for representing Miles and our district in sharing some of the wonderful things that are being done to ensure student learning.
• Tichenor Middle School: Tichenor received an aquatic grant and has been working with students through hands-on activities and events to provide students real-life science opportunities.
• Lloyd Memorial High School: This week Mr. Riehemann and I met with our first student advisory committee. The students were very insightful and informative. We look forward to collaborating with them to make our district the best it can be! Thanks to everyone involved that made this possible.
• Maintenance/Transportation: The maintenance/transportation department has been working diligently to make repairs and fulfill work orders and to transport our students safely. These staff members have accomplished quite a bit . Most of the maintenance department will be working over the winter break to continue that work. We appreciate all of their efforts!
• Food Service: More students than ever are participating in breakfast and lunch. This is largely attributed to the work being done by our staff members of the food service department. Thank you for providing our students with nutritious and delicious meals!

News and Events

• The Lloyd Girls' Varsity Basketball Team defeated Newport Ind. High School in the first round of the Grant County Tournament that began yesterday. The tournament started yesterday and will end on December 23rd.
• The Lloyd Boys' Varsity Basketball Team will host the Lloyd Memorial High School Invitational Tournament from 12/26/-12/28. Their first game will be on Sunday, December 27th at 8PM against North Laurel.
• The Fall Cycle for KTIP has concluded. Interns, you are halfway through your internship program. Resource Teachers, the district deadline for the spring timesheet will be April 23, 2010. Thanks to everyone for getting your timesheets submitted.
• ACCESS Testing for ESL/ELL Students will begin in January. This testing is a requirement of the state testing and NCLB and ALL ESL/ELL students must be tested at all schools. ALL STUDENTS SHALL BE RELEASED FROM THEIR CLASSES WHEN CALLED FOR ACCESS TESTING. NO STUDENTS SHALL BE PENALIZED IN ANY WAY FOR HAVING TO MISS ANY PORTION OF THEIR CLASSES FOR ACCESS TESTING.
• MAP TESTING winter testing window is January 11-January 29th.
• Tumble Books is a program that has been purchased for all schools. Please contact Mr. Palmore, Ms. Hellmann, or me if you have any questions about how to access this great resource for all grade levels.
• Site visits went very well and we learned a great deal about the strategies being implemented to move students toward proficiency.

ACCOLADES

• The district team has conducted 3 site visits and have had some wonderful discussions with teachers at Arnett, Tichenor, and Lindeman. Site visits at Howell, Miles, and Lloyd will occur in the next few weeks. We are very appreciative of the work teachers and principals are doing to focus on student learning, use real-time MAP data, other formative data, and the strives to improve instruction and increase student learning. Once all site visits are conducted we will post and share some of the great initiatives and ideas going on at the schools that other schools may be interested in replicating.
• On November 13th, all of the elementary teachers will be getting together for a district PLC. The school principals and teachers collaborated to create a fantastic agenda. Mr. Riehemann, the principal at Lloyd High School and Dr. Jennifer Cottingham will also be joining to help facilitate the grade level PLCs.
• Tichenor Middle School Student, Hayden Molitor participated in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington, D.C. He was nominated by teacher, Linda Noll.
• Lloyd High School is learning about and applying Developmental Assets for students. Chris Reeves, the school counselor has become a certified trainer and is collaborating with teachers.
• October 11th Tichenor Middle School students Beth Sheriff and Morgan Campbell as well as other Tichenor students participated in the Walk for the Cure in Downtown Cincinnati. Ms. Rainone and Ms. Campbell also walked with Tichenor Middle School Students.
• Tichenor Middle School Teachers and Administrators are collaborating with Joyce Harris, Literacy Consultant, and Tammie Sherry, NKU outreach literacy consultant to focus on literacy for students in all content areas. The staff has been pre-assessing and developing strategies to be implemented schoolwide.
• Lloyd High School held a Holocaust Assembly on October 27th. The guest speakers were Holocaust survivors who shared their stories with our students. It was a very moving experience for everyone in attendance. The presentation was a collaboration between the YSC and the teachers.
• On October 24th, Special Olympians and their families showed up for this year's Special Olympic Bowling Competition. There were over 50 people from Erlanger in attendance. Olympians from Tichenor, Lloyd, and graduates competed for the gold. Thanks goes out to those involved and Candace Campbell, Officer Brendel and Sam for their part as dignitaries handing out the medals.
• Lindeman Elementary will host a parent-involvement night with a live band, Salsa dancing and activities for parents and students on November 20th.
• Howell Elementary students partnered with Mazaak to conduct a penny war. The collaboration raised over $800 for the Elsmere Fire Department.
• I had the opportunity to conduct walk-throughs at Miles and Howell with Mr. Sayler and Mr. Gillis. We saw many great things occurring in classes we visited.

Veteran's Day

• Our schools had some wonderful tributes to our Veterans this week for Veteran's Day. Thank you to our Veterans for all that you have dedicated and sacrified and to our schools for honoring them.

• The Kentucky Center for Mathematics will hold the annual KCM Conference on February 4th & 5th. It is only $60 to attend. Research-based effective strategies for math teachers in grades K-12 will be provided. Conference strands include: Teaching for Depth of Understanding and Formative and Summative Assessments. • The Kentucky Reading Project is now accepting Applications for elementary teachers interested in taking part. The project provides training in research-based literacy strategies, free graduate credit, stipends and free materials. Trivia Night

Special Olympics Trivia Night was held on October 17th. Erlanger-Elsmere competed in the event with 5 tables! Howell Elementary Captain Krista Wainscott returned to her school with the 1st place trophy. Arnett/Miles had a table that included Mr. Engel, Ms. Weber, and Mr. Pilgrim. Captain Candace Campbell sported 3 teams from Tichenor and Lloyd. Team members included Mr. & Mrs. Flick, Mr. Robles, Mr. Hughes, the Edwards family, Ms. Burk, the Woolleys, Ms. Donnell, Ms. Hils, and Ms. Clark. One of the Campbell teams came in 2nd. Officer Brendel is now in charge of the event. Around $1900 was raised for Special Olympics.
